About Us
We are Spring Valley Farm
In May 2014 we entered the world of farming; buying 27 acres in the valley, complete with two steers – Ferdinand and Pepper, a rooster named Henry, and a hen named Clarice. We’ve added more to our brood (41 animals in all) and never looked back. While we would love to paint a lovely picture of how life is on the farm, the realities and enormity of it all can be overwhelming at times. This site is a chronicle of our journey. It will talk about our mistakes as well as our triumphs. It will share about new animals (I am still holding out for an emu and miniature donkey) and also new adventures in what our farm will be used for.
Our Story
At the end of 2013, we took a leap of faith. We wanted to buy a farm, have land, and somehow use the farm to benefit others. Needless to say, our house sold quickly, we didn’t have a farm, and wound up in a tiny interim place for 7 months. 5 people crammed into 900 square feet and the worst winter ever was a recipe for chaotic times.
By March 2014 things began to change. A phone call asking, “Are you still interested (in the farm)?” A couple of high-fives, a meeting with the owners, and a handshake by the end. On June 1st we were knee-deep in remodeling and cleaning up the land. We acquired 2 steer in the purchase and by the end of June had added 13 chickens and two honeybee hives to the brew. We went from no animals to a total of 21 by the end of August.
We, my husband and I, are not from farming families. We have no background in agriculture or livestock, yet we are blessed to have a tight knit group of community who will help us out with any questions, or show up to wrestle an unruly steer named Ferdinand.
So without further adieu, we bring you Spring Valley Farm. We really don’t know what we are doing, but we have the passion and desire to figure it all out, one mistake at a time.
